Starting Music for Friday, Feb. 18th, 2022

Aloha world! Here in the Hall of Fame city located in NE Ohio (USA), it’s FRIDAY, Feb. 18th –the 49th day of the year. We have cloudy skies and flurries to start the day, with a low of 20 degrees Fahrenheit later tonight. Our high was 31 early this morning. We saw a whopping 1.71” of precipitation and a trace of snowfall yesterday/overnight. The forecast for yesterday was off by -2 degrees for our low and +1 degree for our high. The official recorded overnight snow depth is now showing 2”, with a visible layer of snow from the current flurries. We are still under a flash flood watch for rivers. Winds are brisk out of the NW at 0 to 14 mph, barometric pressure is up at 30.10, and the humidity was officially at 78%.

The sun came up 1 minute earlier than yesterday at 7:15 a.m. and will set 1 min. later than yesterday at 18:03 hours. The moon continues its phase of waning gibbous (96.2%) and will start its run above the horizon at 20:16 hours. It set earlier this morning at 8:34 a.m.

Those of you with clear, very dark skies and a telescope 4” or more in diameter can watch the comet 19P/Borrelly run through Aries the Ram tonight/early in the morning. You will need an 8” or larger scope to see details like the tail. It will be 6 degrees SE of Sheratan (Beta Arietis). In the same general area, you will find Uranus (5.5 degrees E of Borrelly) and the spiral galaxy M74 (~8.5 degrees W in Pisces).

This morning I removed 6,603 trackers (mostly social media and advertising) from my PC. That’s over 47,000 trackers in 6 days and the real cause of internet lag and slow connections. Trackers are the result of an over-infatuation with SEO results by media giants and attempts to persuade you to spend more time as “a prisoner of your own device(s)” for their own gain (power, money, etc.). Break the cycle. Make your own content.

On this date in 1503, Henry Tudor (later Henry VIII) established the Prince of Wales. Tudor architecture originated during this time and is still popular today. In 1879, the sculptor (Bartholdi) was awarded a patent for his design of the Statue of Liberty. In 1885, Mark Twain published his famous “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” book. In 1909, the Boston Red Sox traded the 41-year-old Cy Young to the Cleveland Naps, and in 1968, David Gilmour joined Pink Floyd.

Today’s birthdays include Alessandro Volta (invented the 1st battery), Ohio’s own Toni Morrison (writer, 1st African-American woman to win a Nobel Prize), actor John Travolta (“Up your nose with a rubber hose”), actress Cybill Shepherd (loved her interactions with Bruce Willis in Moonlighting), and actress Molly Ringwald (The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink, etc.).

Moving on to sports –tonight I’ll be rooting the following professional teams..

NBA

(no games: All-Star weekend)

NHL

Dallas Stars vs. Chicago Blackhawks

..and the following collegiate teams..

NCAA Men’s basketball

Kent State Golden Flashes vs. Ohio Bobcats

NCAA Women’s basketball

(none of the teams I follow are scheduled to play)

..and, of course, Team USA in the Winter Olympics.

Yesterday/last night in professional sports, the Mavericks beat the Pelicans and the Blue Jackets beat the Blackhawks in a crazy game with tons of scoring! In collegiate sports, the Zips lost to the Huskies, the Mean Green got by the Owls, the Lady Buckeyes couldn’t get by the Lady Terrapins, and the Lady Mean Green hammered the Lady Owls. Team USA remains in the 4th position for the Winter Olympics medals count. They still have 8 Gold, 8 Silver, and 5 Bronze (21 total).

Here are the results at the close of yesterday’s markets for my itty-bitty (but growing!) portfolio and the stocks that I’m watching (Overall refers to “since I’ve been tracking daily; mid-January for MTCH and T; mid-February for VMEO).

MTCH -$5.45/share; -$3.96/share overall

VMEO -$0.17/share; -$0.25/share overall

T (AT&T) -$0.18/share; -$1.45/share overall

The portfolio was mostly down thanks to losses by DIS and MJ, but NOA saw a nice little jump. The Minds coins cryptocurrency (based on Ethereum) was down this morning approximately -$0.13 to $2.16/coin; -$0.71/coin overall.

Check out Stockpile for traditional shares because you can order by a dollar amount instead of whole shares and build from there.

Well, that’s a wrap. I’ll be starting the day off with one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs –“Keep Talking” by from the album, “The Division Bell” (1994), which also includes “What Do You Want From Me” and “Coming Back To Life”. Written (co-writers include David Wright and Polly Samson) and sung by David Gilmour, the song features the talk-box guitar effect and a speech made for a British television ad by Stephen Hawking. The speech moved David to tears and he has described it as “the most powerful piece of television advertising that I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Remember, Fear is the Mind-Killer, Don’t Panic, Keep Your Head Right with Ball, and May God be gracious to you and bless you and make His face shine upon you.
